Stansted sits north east of London. Portsmouth is on the south coast, almost due south west. There is no direct road between them, so the journey runs down the M11, onto the M25, anticlockwise round most of the western arc to junction 10, and then south on the A3. Around 130 miles and about 158 minutes.
Roughly a third of that is spent on the M25 alone. That is the part worth understanding, because it is the difference between a comfortable arrival and a stressful one.

Why the departure hour matters more than the mileage

The western M25 is the busiest stretch of motorway in Britain. Leave Stansted at 5am and this journey runs close to two and a quarter hours. Leave at 8am on a weekday and it can be well over three.
