Junction five is the hinge of every journey from here, and the direction you take round it decides the drive. Clockwise takes you over the Dartford Crossing towards the M11 for Stansted; anti-clockwise runs past the M23 for Gatwick and on to the M4 and M25 junction fourteen for Heathrow. For central London and London City, most drivers prefer the A21 and A20 through Bromley and Lewisham over the motorway, particularly outside the peak.
Gatwick usually runs forty to fifty minutes. Heathrow is around the hour, and can stretch well beyond it if the western M25 is having a bad morning. London City is roughly fifty minutes to an hour. Stansted is the one route where the Dartford Crossing is unavoidable, and it is also the one most worth leaving early for.
