The Strand runs from Trafalgar Square to the Aldwych, past the big hotels, Somerset House and a cluster of theatres. It is a busy through-route with bus lanes for most of its length, so a private hire car cannot simply pull up outside — but the side streets and hotel entrances along it work well once you know which to use.

Getting out of the Strand

The Embankment runs parallel a street away and is the quickest way both east and west for much of the day — east to the Limehouse Link for London City, west towards Westminster and the A4 for Heathrow. Gatwick means crossing at Waterloo or Blackfriars and heading down the A23.
The Strand itself has bus lanes along most of its length and the Aldwych one-way system has been reworked in recent years, so the approach a driver takes is not always the obvious one. Agreeing the point at booking removes the guesswork.

Theatre, hotel and Somerset House pickups

The theatres on and around the Strand empty at much the same time as the rest of the West End, and the roads fill for twenty minutes or so afterwards. For a post-show collection we set a point clear of the crowd. Somerset House events, particularly the winter ice rink and summer concerts, close the immediate approaches — for those we agree a meeting point on Temple Place or Surrey Street.
