There is effectively one way out of Thanet by car. The A299 Thanet Way carries you west past Herne Bay and Whitstable to the M2 at Faversham, and from there the choice is the M2 and M20 towards the crossing and the M25, or the M2 all the way to the A2 and into south east London. The road is good, but it is not short, and the Medway stretch of the M2 is where an ordinary morning turns into a slow one.
Gatwick generally runs a shade under two hours in clear conditions and comfortably over it in the Friday evening peak. Heathrow adds another twenty to thirty minutes because you carry on round the M25 past the M23 and the M4. London City is the quickest of the airports at about an hour and three quarters, since the A2 feeds you almost to the door. We set your pickup time from the day and the hour, not from an average.
Going the other way, the Dartford Crossing is the single most reliable source of delay on any Margate journey that crosses the river. Where your route uses it, the charge is in your fare.
