East to London City the route runs along Tooley Street and Jamaica Road to the Rotherhithe Tunnel, or through Blackwall — twenty-five to forty minutes and the quickest airport run from here. Gatwick heads south through Elephant and Castle and down the A23, about the hour, with no river crossing needed.
Heathrow is the awkward one: either over London Bridge and west along the Embankment and the A4, or south of the river on the A3 and A316. Both cross the length of the city and both should be allowed an hour and a half in the afternoon rather than the hour the distance implies.
Locally, Borough High Street, Tooley Street and St Thomas Street are congested for most of the day, and the streets around Borough Market are narrow and often closed to traffic. The exact address, and which side of the station you are on, makes a real difference to how quickly the driver reaches you.
