The cruise terminals are not the ferry port

Dover handles both, and they are different destinations. The ferry port is the one you see from the A20 with the vehicle lanes; the cruise terminals sit round at the Western Docks, in and around the old Marine Station building.
If you book a taxi to Dover and say nothing else, you may well be taken to the ferry terminal. Tell us your ship and cruise line and your driver will go to the correct cruise terminal entrance.

The Gatwick to Dover route

M23 north to the M25, east and round to the M26, then the M20 through Kent and down the A20 into Dover. Around 83 miles and about 102 minutes. Mostly motorway, with the descent into the port area at the end.

When cross-Channel freight backs up, a contraflow system is put in place on the M20 that changes the road layout across Kent and can add substantial time. It is the biggest variable on any journey to Dover and it can appear at short notice.
