There are two ways east and they suit different days. The M5 and M4 route is longer in miles but all motorway; the A303 across Somerset and Wiltshire is shorter and quicker when it is clear, and considerably slower when it is not — the single-carriageway sections around Stonehenge and Mere are the usual culprits, and summer Saturdays are the worst of it. We choose between them on the day rather than assuming.
Bristol is a straight run up the M5 to junction eighteen or twenty-two and then the A38, about an hour and a half. Exeter Airport itself is fifteen minutes on the A30, and the local flights from there make a short connection worth considering rather than driving the whole way east.
